With strong economies of scale and strategic acquisitions, Cal-Maine has cemented itself as the dominant force in the U.S. egg industry.

Over the past two years, Cal-Maine’s profits have surged to historic highs. The primary driver? A nationwide supply shock caused by Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), which decimated flocks across the country starting in 2022. While most egg producers suffered massive losses and couldn’t meet demand, Cal-Maine remained virtually unaffected by the outbreak. Thanks to its high biosecurity standards, diverse geographic footprint, and operational scale, the company kept producing and shipping eggs while others were sidelined.

This positioned Cal-Maine perfectly to capitalize on skyrocketing egg prices. Wholesale prices spiked from around $1.60 per dozen to over $5.00 per dozen. With less competition and steady production, the company was able to sell more eggs, over 330 million dozen in a recent quarter, at dramatically higher prices. That led to massive growth in revenue and earnings: net income rose more than 4x in just one year, and diluted earnings per share jumped over 200%.

While the surge in profits may normalize as supply chains recover, Cal-Maine's ability to weather disruptions and seize market opportunities shows the strength of its business model. For investors, the recent boom highlights how essential food commodities, and the companies that produce them reliably, can offer both resilience and upside in volatile times.
