This is EXACTLY what I want to see when studying a company

Tesla had their "Master Plan".

During my research, I just found this... basically Duo's "Master Plan".

You can find it here... it's a good read.

In my messaging for why the Flank method works, I often say there are two benefits to studying the crap out of a business before buying the stock:

  • First, you make sure you're buying winnings

  • Second, and often overlooked, when you study a business in your Circle of Competence, or related to your profession, you get better at understanding your own business/profession.

That's how I'm going to study Duolingo. They gamified a "cognitively intensive task" (learning a new language) through their amazing ability to gamify and experiment. By me studying the crap out of Duo, I believe I will be able to help make Flank better.

Some of the top things from Duo's Handbook:

  • They built a "monetization engine" around their freemium app (Flank has a freemium app, but no monetization engine haha)

  • Luis (CEO/founder) reports every bug that he finds even to this day

  • Dogfooding-- they make sure internally they are using the app daily. They even built a shaking feature for internal reporting!!

  • How they approach design/product decisions:

  • Experimentation

    • They move quick to get data on if a new feature works at helping people learn quicker... if it doesn't work, they take it out. They also don't do "MVPs" as they see them as subpar to their standards. Instead, they do "V1s"

  • They gamify for attention vs TikTok

  • Making marketing weird

    • In the early days, they had a hard time finding their voice (I get that haha). Instead of trying to sound more business-y, they made it weird to stand out.

  • The Green Machine

    • They call their method for turning these theories/principles into practice

    • It's broken into six steps:

The more I'm digging into Duolingo, the more I'm liking it. What do y'all think? I might be taking a longterm position soon... just need to complete more research
