Who Are The Executives?

Austin Russell, born March 14, 1995, is the CEO of Luminar Technologies, an automotive LiDAR hardware and software research firm.

I’ve been trying to wrap my head around who he is, what Peter Thiel saw in him to offer him the Thiel Fellowship program, enabling him to drop out of Stanford 3-months into an Applied Physics degree, and found such a high-risk, high-tech venture.

The following video was at the Stanford Entrepreneurial Thought Leader livestream in December 2023. After having seen and read many pieces of media to include him, I think this one summarizes best the qualities that Peter Thiel took note of. It seems to me that Austin Russell is confident his abilities as a leader, and comfortable with who he is, from his intellect to his dorky (subjective) laugh, reminiscent of Jeff Bezos.

I think he’s needed a lot of time to learn how to run a business from such a young age, but the fact that he’s still going show’s he’s desperate to make it succeed, despite these missteps. He currently owns a 13% stake in the company, down from his 33% stake when this talk takes place.
