Coke's Competitive Advantage

Do They Have A Competitive Advantage?

Does Coke have a competitive advantage?

Yes, and it's structural.

Coca-Cola's moat isn't a better-tasting product. It's a system competitors cannot replicate at scale:

  • an asset-light concentrate model,

  • ~225 franchise bottling partners, and

  • roughly 2.2 billion servings of its products consumed worldwide every day across more than 200 countries.

Competitors are:

  • Pepsi ($~195B market cap)

  • Monster ($88B market cap) - Coke owns ~19.5% of Monster

  • Keurig Dr. Pepper ($38B market cap)

The most obvious competitor is Pepsi.

Pepsi has an inferior business model for a few reasons. Primarily, it's their structure. They also own Yum! Brands, which includes Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, and this completely changes the business model. Coke's strength lies in the fact that it is an asset-light model, and the new CEO has doubled down on those efforts.

There is currently an activist push at Pepsi for them to adopt a similar asset-light model. If that becomes true, then I would want to explore Pepsi further.

Sentiment: Bullish
