Do They Have A Competitive Advantage?

Robinhood has established itself as a leading retail brokerage for a new generation of investors. As of early 2025, Robinhood reports 25.5 million funded accounts (customers who have made an initial deposit)

Customer Demographics: Robinhood’s user base skews young and relatively new to investing, which is core to its competitive positioning. The median age of Robinhood investors is 31 years old. Account sizes are generally small – the median account balance is only about $240, while the average account is around $5,000. This highlights Robinhood’s appeal to people of modest means or beginners (by contrast, traditional brokerages have average account sizes in the tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars). Despite the small balances, the cumulative assets under custody on Robinhood have grown substantially as the user base grew. By Q4 2024, Robinhood’s Assets Under Custody (AUC) reached $193–204 billion , roughly double the AUC a year prior (helped by market recovery and net deposits). This is still a fraction of incumbents’ asset levels (e.g. Schwab’s client assets exceed $10 trillion ), but it underscores that Robinhood now holds a significant pool of retail investor funds.

Competitive Market Position: Schwab reported 36.5 million active brokerage accounts as of 2024 and Fidelity about 38 million retail accounts as of 2023 . While Robinhood’s ~25 million accounts are somewhat fewer, its share of newer investors is significant; an estimated 43% of new retail brokerage accounts in 2023 were opened by investors age 18–35 across the industry 

Competitive Landscape: Schwab and Fidelity are the main players in the brokerage space. While they offer similar comprehensive services including banking, retirement, robo-advisory, and a broad product lineup, RH offerings are narrower but expanding (noteably adding retirement accounts). Unlike Schwab/Fidelity, Robinhood offers direct crypto trading—a key differentiator for younger investors.

Financially, Schwab and Fidelity remain highly profitable due to scale, interest revenue from client cash, and asset management fees. Robinhood’s smaller scale limits absolute earnings, yet it’s profitable with strong margins, leveraging interest income growth and low operational costs.

E*TRADE (Morgan Stanley) & Other Traditional Brokerages

TRADE (acquired by Morgan Stanley) primarily complements Morgan Stanley’s wealth advisory services. With fewer retail accounts than Robinhood, it competes mostly on active trading features. Although ETRADE offers advanced trading tools and integrated banking products, it lacks Robinhood’s crypto offering and strong brand among Millennials and Gen Z.

Other traditional firms like Merrill Edge (Bank of America) and Interactive Brokers (IBKR) serve different niches. Merrill Edge integrates seamlessly with banking, but appeals less to younger, active traders. IBKR targets sophisticated traders with extensive offerings but a complex interface, making it unsuitable for Robinhood’s typical user.

Webull

Webull, launched in 2017, closely mirrors Robinhood’s app-based, commission-free trading model. With roughly 4.3M funded accounts, Webull trails Robinhood significantly in U.S. scale, though it’s expanding internationally. Webull differentiates itself with more advanced charting, analytics, and active-trading tools, appealing to a subset of Robinhood users seeking more complexity. While Webull is a key competitor, Robinhood maintains stronger brand recognition, larger U.S. market share, and significantly greater revenue.

SoFi Invest (Fintech One-Stop Shop)

SoFi Invest operates within a broader fintech ecosystem, cross-selling investing alongside loans, banking, and other financial products. It offers robo-advisory, crypto, fractional shares, and integrated banking features but is less focused on active trading. Robinhood remains stronger for trading volume, options availability, and brand strength among younger, novice investors. SoFi’s advantage is an all-in-one convenience, appealing to users seeking simplicity across multiple financial services.

Other Notable Competitors

Robinhood indirectly competes with crypto exchanges like Coinbase and fintech apps like Square’s Cash App and Public.com.

Coinbase dominates dedicated crypto traders, while Cash App and similar platforms offer limited stock and crypto trading geared toward casual users. Robinhood’s advantage lies in offering comprehensive stock/options/crypto trading within a highly intuitive, low-cost app, effectively bridging casual fintech and traditional brokerage markets.

Overall, Robinhood’s competitive strength is its focused, intuitive user experience, appeal to younger investors, direct crypto integration, and expanding financial offerings. Despite intense competition, Robinhood’s brand and product design have created a defensible niche.
