Is There A Qualitative Moat?

Is There A Qualitative Moat?

On qualitative moats - Fastenal's strongest moat is the cost of switching. Other than that an the brand moat, there are not other moats of note.

  • Brand Moat - Many manufacturing sites are full of these Fastenal vending machines and the employees of the manufacturers seem to "not hate" them, which is a glowing review from manufacturing employees. However, to a management team operating production facilities on razor thin margins, its not obvious that their brand is markedly more valuable than any competitor offering similar machines.
  • Switching moat - When a company contracts Fastenal for consumable supplies, it is painful to switch. Their consumption and inventory data is stored in fastenal systems, and the vending machines are large physical objects on their floors.
  • Economy of scale - Fastenal's distribution sites do not notably outnumber their competitors (MSCI, WW Grainger), but Fastenal has the largest number of onsite supply points for its customers. This lends itself to a potentially more effective distribution system, but that is not obvious. Fastenal's onsite growth does involve hiring more employees per unit of growth, so there is not anything like an amazon type economy of scale.
