What's their growth strategy?

NVIDIA’s growth strategy follows a platform-centered, integration-driven expansion model. They basically follow a "classic compounder" approach. In the words of the CEO: "A new industrial revolution is underway—transforming energy into artificial intelligence."

In the following I will try to outline part of this strategy short and precise:

Plattform > Product:

NVIDIA is building a complete ecosystem of hardware, software, and system integration. This shifts competition away from single chips (a commodity risk) toward end-to-end infrastructures. They are a company which is a long-term growth engine that shape their market environment rather than merely operating within it.

Vertical Integration and Network Effects:

By linking GPUs, CUDA software, and data center systems, NVIDIA creates network effects, similar to Buffett’s moat through ecosystem. Once customers develop on CUDA, they remain in NVIDIA’s universe because alternatives involve high switching costs.

Focus on New Markets AI Factories:

NVIDIA is transforming datacenters into AI Factories, a new industrial layer between the cloud and applications. This vision aligns with a notion of Munger. The anticipation of obvious technology waves before they are broadly understood.

R&D - Moatexpansion and building

With nearly USD 9 billion in R&D spending in 2024, NVIDIA secures technological dominance. A company that can reinvest large amounts of capital at high rates for long periods creates compounding machines.

Partnership & Acquisitions as Capital Allocation

Targeted acquisitions of key technologies (Mellanox, NVLink) and global partnerships (OpenAI, Aramco, AWS) reflect Buffett-style capital allocation. Expansion where existing strengths are reinforced and synergistic effects can be used, never through empire-building.

Cultural Foundation of the business - Tech excellence and Iteration speed

Jensen Huang's leadership and company culture is based on deep technical understanding, open communication, and an extreme willingness to learning and iteration on problems. This is something which acts as a intangible moat competitors struggle to replicate and copy.

Summary/Core Takeaway:

NVIDIA's growth strategy represents a modern execution of the compounding flywheel as follows: Platform -> Ecosystem lock-in -> Economics of scale -> Higher margins -> Increased R&D -> Technological leadership + Iteration and execution speed -> gives (exponential) market tailwind. From my perspective NVIDIA has basically combined what Fisher always searched for in a company with Buffett's capital allocation discipline and Munger's network/Lollapalooza effect in its business. They engineered a self reinforcing cycle an "AI Compounding " Machine in the Trillion dollar market for AI infrastructure. They are the picks and shovels seller for AI infrastructure, with expanding business in other domains helping multiple companies improve and grow their business even faster.
