OpenAI's rumor that caused Sonos to drop 10% in a single day

On July 14th, 2026, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI's first consumer device will be a screen-free AI smart speaker that will ship in 2027.

Sonos lost nearly a tenth of its market value in hours over this rumor.

I want to explore this story in detail, as I believe it will have a material impact on Sonos' future performance.

OpenAI's rumor

From Bloomberg's report, OpenAI is planning to push into consumer devices with a mobile screen-free smart speaker designed to be a new type of home computer for the AI era (cool!)

The product, still under development, is meant to serve as a humanlike AI companion that lives in the home, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the project hasn't been announced. It will help control smart-home appliances, play media, answer questions, respond to messages and tap into the range of capabilities offered by OpenAI's ChatGPT, they said.

The io deal bought people as much as drawings. LoveFrom, Ive’s studio, is helping craft the lineup, Evans Hankey, once Apple’s head of industrial design, is leading development of the speaker, and OpenAI hired Vision Pro chief Paul Meade from Apple last month.

Apple sued OpenAI last week, four days before this Bloomberg report was released, accusing the company of stealing trade secrets.

OpenAI believes the product's defining feature will be its personality and ability to connect on a humanlike level with users. The speaker incorporates mechanical elements that can move on their own, creating a sense that it is alive and not just an object responding to commands. The machine also will draw on personal information such as emails to better understand its owner.

Devices' communications will rely on a more advanced version of ChatGPT voice mode, which OpenAI is calling GPT live. It rolled out earlier this month. There's a video on that link, which is kinda cool... they used old ladies to show how 'natural' and easy it is... huh.

Precedent #1: Chegg

This is not the first publicly traded company that OpenAI has bought down.

In May of 2023, Chegg (an education app) fell 48% in one day. Chegg CEO Dan Rosenweig said this: "Since March we saw a significant spike in student interest in ChatGPT. We now believe it's having an impact on our new customer growth rate."

It was not overblown news. Chegg went on to cut 22% of its staff in May 2025 and another 45% in October 2025, blaming "the new realities of AI." The stock is now down 99% from its 2021 peak.

Precedent #2: Hyperscalers make their own speakers

This next precedent bodes better for Sonos. Big tech has assaulted Sonos before.

Amazon Echo launched in late 2014, Google Home in 2016, and HomePod in 2018. These were also companies that could price hardware at cost. This was the standing bear case for Sonos at its 2018 IPO, but what actually happened was entirely different from what the bears expected.

Sonos revenue went from $900 million in FY16 to $1.72 billion in FY21, nearly doubling straight through the big tech onslaught.

Premium multi-room audio and $30 kitchen pucks turned out to be different markets. Sonos didn't just survive big tech's home assistants; it absorbed them.

Alexa runs on Sonos speakers today, and Conrad's stated platform ambition is "hundreds of services, formats, and AI personalities." It seems that the new CEO is aware of this potential threat and making very intelligent design decisions to combat it.

CEO Conrad called conversational AI the most compelling of his five growth dimensions that I outlined in my growth strategy post.

My thoughts

I feel like this is an overblown story. OpenAS product does not exist today. Its earliest ship date is 2027, and Apple's lawsuit is seeking an injunction that could either delay or block it.

Plus, as we all know, OpenAI is starting to have money problems. I'm not sure if this product will even make it to market.

But even if it does, a battery-powered companion puck does not replace the ARC Ultra, a subwoofer, and two surrounds bolted to a 75-inch TV. And Sonos is eager and ready to partner with the hyperscalers - just like how Uber is combating the self-driving era.
