Is chipotle a buy? - The Burrito Index
🌯 Introducing "The Burrito Index"
Inspired by unconventional indicators like "The Stripper Index," I'm coining a new phrase: "The Burrito Index." This metric uses a single stock—Chipotle (CMG)—to offer a real-time pulse on the American consumer and the broader economy.
I recently read an article (link below) about Chipotle's stock plunging following a projection of lower sales. Their latest earnings call served as a clear, real-time snapshot of the middle-class consumer.
On paper, the results were mixed:
• Earnings per Share came in right on target at $0.29.
• Revenue of $3.0 billion missed expectations by approximately $30 million.
• Comparable Sales were up just 0.3%, a meager gain driven by higher average check sizes, not by more customers.
For the third straight quarter, Chipotle cut its full-year same-store sales outlook, now projecting only low single-digit growth. The message is unmistakable: the consumer is slowing down.
The Index Explained
The subsequent stock drop perfectly illustrates "The Burrito Index." It primarily reflects the spending habits of the middle-class consumer—specifically those aged 25 to 35 earning under $100,000 a year, a demographic that accounts for 40% of Chipotle's sales.
If this core group continues to feel the need to tighten their budgets, eating out at fast-casual spots like Chipotle will be an immediate cut.
A Temporary Dip or Something More?
I believe in the resilience of the American economy. If this is just a temporary lull, the middle class will eventually resume spending, and Chipotle will see a significant benefit. This brings us to the core investment question:
Is Chipotle overpriced, fairly priced, or undervalued?
I am now beginning my due diligence to determine if the company remains fundamentally strong and is simply experiencing weak earnings due to a soft economy, or if deeper, internal issues at Chipotle are the true cause of the drop in sales.
