How Do They Make Money?

Six Flags is the largest regional amusement park operator in North America.

They run 27 amusements parks, 15 separately gated water parks and nine resort properties.

They generate revenue from:

  • sales of admission

  • purchases of food

  • merchandise and games both inside and outside the parks

  • sale of accommodations

  • other extra-charge products

They purchase:

  • rides and attractions

  • inventory

  • operating supplies

  • services from a variety of suppliers

Six Flags is a seasonal business. 70% of the revenue of annual attendance occur during the second and third quarters each year (from Memorial Day through Labor Day).

Revenue Breakdown

They break their revenues out between three categories:

Concessionaire remittance refers to the revenue Six Flags pays out to third party operators inside the park.

Recurring Revenue

Important to note! Six Flags does have Season Passes, which represents recurring revenue. They don't disclose how many season passes they've sold, which I don't love.

Other Sources of Revenue/Expenses

1. Sponsorships & Advertising

  • Six Flags earns money from corporate sponsorships, brand partnerships, and in-park advertising (like Coca-Cola exclusivity, product placements, and sponsored rides/events).

  • This is a relatively high-margin revenue stream since it requires minimal incremental cost.

2. Licensing & Intellectual Property

  • Some rides and attractions use licensed IP (e.g., DC Comics, Looney Tunes).

  • Six Flags pays royalties for those rights, but they also leverage those brands to drive attendance and merchandising sales — a form of indirect revenue generation.

3. Parking Fees

  • Simple but lucrative — parking is a pure-margin business at scale.

  • For season pass holders, it’s often bundled into premium tiers (which increases pass appeal).

4. Real Estate / Development Opportunities

  • While not a huge driver, Six Flags has real estate holdings around parks and sometimes enters into development deals or joint ventures (e.g., hotels, solar partnerships).
