Understand The Income StatementIn 2022, returns cost retailers about US$816 billion in lost sales. That’s nearly as much as the U.S. spent on public schools and almost twice the cost of returns in 2020. and in 2021 it cost 761 billion. I think increased shipping costs from covid and Union UPS workers will drive this number much higher. I noticed that a lot of packages i order are going through USPS rather than FEDex or UPS. And rather than delivering to my door USPS will just hold it and i have to pick it up. So, my personal buying habits have been curtailed just from this inconvenience. Amazon has a great buying and return experience, my main problems really only arrive from the shipping process. And they definitely eat up market share from ease access to return services. It would likely deter a lot of customers if they changed the program. Amazon net income was 33,364 million dollars in 2021. Then in 2022 it was -2722 million dollars, even though Sales grew about 4400 million dollars. Net income in 2023 was 30,425 million dollars. Even into first quarter 2024 Sales increased from Q1 2023. They are still a fast growing company despite these hiccups.
