Going further what is $UNH How they make their money

United Health Group Inc. Is often thought of a health insurance company in fact a lot of people on my previous posts. Questioned why a health care company would buy robots. I believe I should expand my research a little further on what exactly $UNH is.

I have divided the company into 3 areas primary business, acquired brands/acquisitions, and specialized providers.

Primary Business Lines

  • UnitedHealthcare: Health insurance and benefits

    • Plans offered for: Employer & Individual, Medicare & Retirement, Community & State, Global.

  • Optum Health: Direct patient care and wellness

    • MedExpress (Urgent Care), Surgical Care Affiliates (SCA), Atrius Health.

  • Optum Insight: Data, analytics, and technology

    • Change Healthcare, Advisory Board Company, Optum 360.

  • Optum Rx: Pharmacy care services (Here is where they are purchasing and experimenting with automatic packaging robots for their distribution centers in Arizona.)

    • Catamaran, BriovaRx, Diplomat Pharmacy.

Acquisitions

  • Kelsey-Seybold Clinic: A major multi-specialty group in Texas.

    • DaVita Medical Group: Acquired and integrated into Optum.

    • Holston Medical Group: (Acquired 2025) A large physician-owned organization in TN/VA.

  • Landmark Health: Focuses on in-home medical care for complex patients.

Pharmacy & Specialty:

  • Optum Bank: Provides Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and financial services.

  • Diplomat Pharmacy: Specialty pharmacy services.

  • Solutran: (Acquired 2021) FinTech company providing health and wellness benefits.

  • Overseas operations

    • Banmédica: A large healthcare provider in Chile, Colombia, and Peru.

    • Amil: One of the largest health insurers in Brazil (though UHG has explored divestment options for this in recent years). (This is rumored need more info)

Specialized (Not sure how to categorize product lines)

  • AbleTo: Digital behavioral health provider.

  • Rally Health: Digital health consumer engagement platform.

  • Golden Rule Insurance Company: Often used for individual and short-term health plans.

  • AmeriChoice: Manages Medicaid and government-sponsored programs.

  • Naviguard: Service focused on addressing out-of-network balance medical bills.
