How Do They Make Money?

Visa is a global payments network that facilitates electronic transactions — but it doesn’t issue credit or debit cards itself. Instead, it earns revenue primarily from fees paid by financial institutions and merchants.

Revenue Segments:

Service Revenue Visa earns fees from banks based on transaction volume. In FY2024, this brought in approximately $16.1 billion — a 9% increase year-over-year.

Data Processing Revenue These are fees for processing transactions — authorization, clearing, and settlement. This segment generated $17.7 billion in FY2024, up 11% from the prior year.

International Transaction Revenue Visa charges cross-border transaction fees. This segment generated $12.7 billion in FY2024, also up 9% year-over-year.

Other Revenue Visa offers licensing and value-added services like fraud prevention and analytics. These services brought in $3.2 billion in FY2024 — a 29% increase.

Client Incentives Visa pays volume-based incentives to its partners. While this is a contra-revenue item, it reflects Visa’s strategy to encourage usage. In FY2024, incentives totaled $13.8 billion.

FY2024 Revenue Snapshot:

• Service Revenue: $16.1B (+9%)
• Data Processing: $17.7B (+11%)
• International Transactions: $12.7B (+9%)
• Other Revenue: $3.2B (+29%)
• Total Net Revenue: $35.9B (+10% YoY)

Visa’s business model is built on scale, speed, and trust. With more than 4.5 billion Visa cards in circulation and a presence in over 200 countries, Visa earns a small fee on each transaction — generating consistent and high-margin revenue across the globe.
